Landscape Restoration Work Party Saturday, January 13

For weeks, the plots at Elings Park’s one-acre native species restoration site have been under tarps or mulch – an experiment to see which works best to discourage nonnative weeds from sprouting. With the new year, we uncover the soil to prep for planting an amazing array of California native plants. Join us and partners Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and Channel Islands Restoration at work parties held in January, rain or shine. Sign up at https://bit.ly/3ZCislU.

The Elings Park Transformation Project is overseen by Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and concentrates on the power of California’s native plants to create a healthy ecosystem. Scientific experiments will compare the abundance, diversity, and composition of plant and animal life both before and after the transformation. For more information on the Elings Park Transformation Project, visit https://sbbotanicgarden.org/conservation/our-impact/restoring-habitats/elings-park-transformation/.

The first phase of the project involved installing black plastic and cardboard to discourage weeds, and assembling gopher cages to protect new plantings. Now, the work parties focus on pre-planting prep, planting, and plant care.
