As the seasons change from Summer to Fall, Santa Barbara Revels notes this transition with its annual Revels Equinox, held this year on Sunday, September 24 at 2:30 p.m. at Elings Park’s Godric Grove, in the heart of Santa Barbara.

This al fresco evening combines selections from the hearths and highlands of Scotland that were featured in the annual Winter Solstice last year, with a preview of music from this year’s show The Revels: A Winter Solstice Celebration – “Tales from Ellis Island.” (That upcoming production of The Revels features an entertaining and eclectic mix of Irish, Jewish, and Mexican traditions in music, dance, and storytelling, with three performances on December 16 and 17 at the Lobero Theatre.)
For this Equinox Concert, Mica Basilici, the new Revels Music Director, brings together a diverse ensemble of special musical and vocal artists, including Luis Moreno and Miguelita León on guitar, Anna Mooy on violin, and Rebekah Scogin on harp, concertina, and accordion.
Selections include “Galway Bay,” “The Rising of the Moon,” a Ladino song entitled “Kuando el Rey Nimrod,” and “Pájaro cu.” Mica also provides opportunities for everyone to sing along with the ensemble during traditional favorites “Wild Mountain Thyme” and “Loch Lomond.”
Before the concert, well-known local dramaturg Anna Jensen makes an informative presentation about the background and origins of the musical traditions prior to the concert. There also is a reception with wine, hors d’oeuvres, and an opportunity to meet and talk with the artists.
